Psychological Thriller Trailer Analysis
The trailer of the film "Till death do us part" conforms to typical psychological thrillers, as at the beginning of the trailer the narrative seems to be linear and then becomes non linear, emphasizing on the disruption of the equilibrium linking to Todorov's narrative theory. The trailer starts off with an establishing shot, giving the audience an insight into where all the action will be taking place in the movie and in other words the location and setting of the film. This then cuts to a shot of a man and woman which the audience assumes are a couple and are perhaps the main characters of the film. This is because diegetic sound is used - "a toast to the happy couple" giving the audience the impression that they are a couple and are happily married which may suggest that something is going to happen later on in the film which may ruin their marriage and happiness.
As the trailer progresses, more shots are shown of the couple which reinforces the idea that they are the main characters. Diegetic sound is also used as the female character says "Till death do us part", reinforcing the name of the film showing that those words play a significant part in their marriage and is perhaps what leads to the downfall of their marriage. Also the female character seems to wear red dresses frequently which may connote blood, danger and fear, suggesting that there is a build up of fear and danger. The colour red is also used to display the text of the sub titles i.e "in sickness" "in health" as well as the title of the film at the end, suggesting danger again. This is also exemplified through the use of non-diegetic sound, as the music begins to amplify and some sort of orchestral as well as childlike music begins to play. This may imply that a child was one of the causes of the downfall of their marriage, as the female character was pregnant which did not please her husband. Although, towards the end of the trailer, dark blue is used more frequently which could perhaps suggest the seriousness of the tone of the film, which may draw the audience in as it makes the film seem more realistic.
Moreover, lowkey lighting is used later on the trailer which suggests mystery and that again there is going to be a disruption of the equilibrium of the film which was a happily married couple. Therefore making the trailer conform to typical psychological thrillers. As well as this, most of the trailer is set in multiple houses, which creates a sense of realism for the audience as it allows them to relate to the normal setting of the film. This therefore increases fear, as the audience may picture themselves in the position of the female victim as the audience is now sure that she is the protagonist. This is because various tracking shots are used in the trailer which seems to follow her, allowing the audience to develop a relationship with her.
Furthermore, fast paced editing is used to build up suspense and create tension as well as to not reveal all the scenes of the actual film to the audience which will make them want to watch the full film. As it leaves them uncertain and puzzled. The fact that the trailer ends with the release date, gives the audience an insight into when the film will be released which will anticipated by the audience as they would want to watch it.
